Architectural lighting - between art and technology

Architectural lighting might be simply be defined as symbiosis of art and technology. This means that it requires interdicsiplinary approach to create a good lighting plan for any building or interior, retail space or museum.

Architectural lighting should fullfill several important requirements in order to create an adeguate atmosphere in space:

  • Sustainable – environmental impact of LED bulbs and amount of light that doesn’t cause lighting pollution is important issue
  • Ergonomy – architectural light povides the ease of space use and light good enough to complement the function of space and its safety
  • Aesthetics – besides color of light, design and form of architectural lights also take part in the overall visual quality of space

Contemporary collections are designed to be both efficient and beautiful, hence the line between decorative and architectural light almost disappears.

In office space, it is considered that the architectural lighting complements the natural light and should be on in amount and moment when natural light decreases, to provide enough functionality in space. Otherwise, in other spaces, it serves to create lit enough area to provide normal activities.

In exhibition space, it serves to lighten up the objects exposed and create the proper experience for visitors, or to make just enough light in secondary spaces. Light mustn’t impact the paintings’ color or properties of objects.

In residential or hospitality areas, their visual qualities become more valued. Interesting forms and design expressions have a possibility to be exposed and values as part of interior design.
